Over 400 asset management thought-leaders, professionals, practitioners and sponsors came together for another highly successful Mainstream Conference held in Perth and Melbourne this April (see who attended here) This is the 22nd year this thriving community has come together to explore the leadership, technology, ideas and innovations that are transforming asset management today.
There were three broad areas of focus at this year’s Mainstream Conference:
1. Asset Management Strategy:
ISO 55000 was a big focus for this year’s event with some brilliant perspectives from Scott Morris, (ice Chairman of ISO 55000 US Delegation). Scott shared how ISO 55000 has been applied beyond just Asset Management for Operations and Supply, allowing Sanofi SCO to bring their organisational functions into alignment. We also heard some insightful case studies from Gladstone Area Water Board and BlueScope Steel on how they have successfully leveraged ISO 55000.
2. Leadership and People:
Adding value to the organisation with great asset management, reliability and maintenance leadership remained top of the list of challenges according to our annual research groups with the Asset Management community. We had a range of sessions addressing these challenges, including three interactive sessions on day two run by Cyriel Kortlaven, Jim Benson and Wayne Dyson. These sessions were a massive hit, with comments from attendees such as:
“Great sessions and well facilitated”
“It was very practical and can be implemented early in any organisation”
“Great to do something different”
3. Technology and Innovation:
Technology was a new area of focus for Mainstream 2017 after hearing from the community during our roundtable discussion groups earlier this year that this was the way forward to drive innovation in asset management. The challenge is finding technology which can demonstrably improve asset management and offer true value to the business, a theme that was consistent through the technology sessions presented at the event. We heard from John Bowie on three game changing technologies for asset managers: Drone Technology, Thermal Imaging & 3D Mapping. As well as many other demos and fascinating insights including a sneak peek into New Zealand Steel’s new 3D-enabled strategy that is pushing the boundaries of what is possible in asset management.
The event was an overwhelming success on all accounts. Here are just a few sentiments from our Mainstream community reflecting on the 2017 sessions:
“Challenging. Provocative. Relevant. Excellent!”
“Extremely thought provoking”
“Very practical and easy to follow – I got a lot of ideas from it”
“Great debate with a number of challenges we face regularly”
“Challenged my thinking a lot. I’m not going back home with the same mentality that I came this morning to the conference.”
“Opened my eyes up”
“Outstanding presenter- life changing”
“Excellent. Completely agreed with all the content which was relevant and professionally presented. Of the calibre which meets and exceeds expectations of these types of events.”
“Great candid insights”
“Simple tools to look at opportunities in a different way, I can’t wait to apply them”
“Fresh ideas, new approaches, practical and engaging”
Looking Beyond Mainstream 2017
Our aim here on in is to keep the learning going from this wonderful event. Even if you weren’t able to attend this year, keep an eye out for articles and practical tips from the event sessions we will be sending out over the next few months (great for a refresher for those who attended too!). We’ll also be making full recordings (audio and slides) from selected sessions available for you to download and experience at your leisure.
We’ll be running our annual roundtable discussion groups in September 2017, so if you’d like to be a part of shaping the agenda for Mainstream 2018, get in touch with Simon Yeowart.
